Take an actress-slash-pop singing sensation and a graphic design studio company such as Team Manila, and what do you get? A fusion of youthful style!

Julie Anne San Jose, or Japs as she’s famously known for, is a contract artist of GMA who appeared on screen as young as three years old when she joined Little Miss Philippines. Her career began to pick up in 2005 when she competed in Popstar Kids and was one of the top five finalists. From then on, she has appeared on several shows including Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan, SOP, and Party Pilipinas. You probably know her as Elmo Magalona’s leading lady and the other half of the Julielmo loveteam.

Who knew this talented Filipina actress and singer who can also play the drums, piano, guitar, flute, lyre, keyboard and xylophone, could also design clothes? Talk about a true slashie, right?

The launch of the new collaboration of Team Manila Lifestyle with Julie Anne last March 28, 2012 at the Hard Rock Café gave Candy a sneak peek at the designs.

The collaboration resulted in the My Japs Collection that exudes the star’s bubbly and fun-loving attitude. But get this, the proceeds of the collection go to the cancer patients of the Philippine Children’s Medical Center which really is all about spreading the love!

Julie admits that she’s more of a t-shirt-and-jeans kind of gal and that she wears a lot of orange, which explains the abundance of orange in her designs for the MyJaps Collection. The collection is also a means for her to give back to her supporters and fans, which is kind of like a “token of appreciation” for their undying support.

We also got to ask her about her upcoming movie with Elmo Magalona. We asked what her favorite scenes to shoot in Just One Summer were and she answered, “our scenes together!” So kilig! But the actress refused to spill any deets and encouraged us to watch the movie instead. Rating the movie on the kilig meter, Japs gave it a perfect 10!

No instant success

At two and half years, Julie Anne belted out Donna Cruz’s version of Habang May Buhay. This was the first song she ever sang, and hearing how the tot had potential, her mom enrolled her at the Center for Pop Music when she turned three. In the same year, she was thrust into television via the kids show Batibot. She also did the kiddie pageant route, joining Eat Bulaga’s Little Miss Philippines in 1997 where she ended first runner-up.

When Julie Anne was 11, her grandma encouraged her to join the singing contest Popstar Kids on the now-defunct QTV11 channel. After her top five finish, she got a spot in the show’s spin-off girl group called Sugarpop, with whom she recorded two albums.

The band signed a contract with GMA7 and had appearances in the then Sunday noontime show SOP. “Our group was eventually disbanded, and I was the only one who remained. They made me a mainstay in Party Pilipinas. It was flattering and I was so happy to be part of the show,” recalled Julie Anne.

But the recognition and breaks didn’t automatically materialize. This frustrated her folks, and Julie Anne especially, because she was giving her all in every Sunday performance.

With more production numbers and solo spots assigned to her in the network’s reinvigorated Sunday show, and a musical team-up later on hatched between her and Elmo Magalona — viewers (and her management) were finally sitting up and taking notice. Their teen tandem, with a series of rap musicals to boot, earned the resounding nod of fans and gave birth to the “JuliElmo” love team.

Soap opera theme song recordings, sitcoms, a front act gig for a David Archuleta concert, and awards soon followed. She even landed second place in a “Top 10 Women to Watch in the Year 2012” list, the other honorees of which include accomplished international personalities!

Perhaps what exposed her outside the usual fan base and converted non-believers into Julie Anne addicts themselves was that Youtube video of her acoustic version of Nicki Minaj’s Superbass, registering close to more than 14 million hits. What brought on all the fuss for this former Sugarpop? Clearly, the sweet-faced girl could rap! Something the internet sensation’s female counterparts couldn’t do as well as she does.

Julie Anne San Jose now a recording star

The release of her album was a reality waiting to happen for Kapuso pop star and Internet musical sensation Julie Anne San Jose.

After building a credible reputation as a child singer trained by some of the country’s best mentors, Julie Anne emerged from the crowd quite distinctly by virtue of sheer talent. Her success on the Internet, with a single Youtube music video registering close to more than 14 million hits already (a cover of Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass”), makes her evidently the local artist to watch out for. Julie Anne is definitely someone who showcases what it takes to be pitted against the best in the world.

Julie Anne’s first ever solo album will be set in motion very soon as she has signed an exclusive recording contract with GMA Records, the recording and digital media distribution arm of media giant GMA Network, Inc.

The contract-signing and press conference was held at the GMA Network Center on Feb. 20. Julie Anne is set to launch her first album under GMA Records in the middle of this year.

Although her first TV appearance was when she joined Eat Bulaga’s “Little Miss Philippines” contest when she was three years old, Julie Anne launched her professional singing career in 2005 as a member of the teenage singing group Sugar Pop. The group was a mainstay in the now defunct Sunday noontime musical variety show S.O.P. Having found her niche, she went on as a solo artist under the management of the GMA Artist Center, the talent development and management department of the Kapuso Network.

Julie Anne is seen every Sunday in the musical variety show Party Pilipinas on GMA-7. She will also top bill the teen romance movie Just One Summer with fellow Tween star Elmo Magalona. It will be shown in theaters nationwide.

JUST ONE SUMMER. Special request naman daw ni Direk Mac Alejandre si Tita Glo para makasama sa pelikulang Just One Summer, na launching movie ng loveteam nina Julie Anne San Jose at Elmo Magalona.

Paliwanag nga ni Direk Mac sa story conference ng Just One Summer, number one fan siya ni Tita Glo at lucky charm din daw niya ang beteranang aktres.

Si Tita Glo kasi ang gumanap na lola ni Richard Gutierrez sa Let The Love Begin, kunsaan kasama rin si Angel Locsin. Certified box-office hit ang naturang pelikula.

Sabi pa ng dating Sampaguita Pictures contract star, “I am happy to work with new stars.

“Dumaan din kasi ako sa pagiging baguhan ‘tulad nila.

“Noon, sinuportahan tayo ng mga malalaking artista. Now, I am doing the same thing.

“Parang you are just paying it forward. Kung ano ang nakuha mong tulong noon, ibabahagi mo siya sa iba ngayon.

Dagdag pa ni Tita Glo, “This is a special movie for me because I will be working again with Direk Mac. Matagal kaming hindi nagkatrabaho niyan.

“It’s nice to know na nire-request kang makatrabaho ng isang director.

“Marami naman silang puwedeng pagpilian, pero nakakataba ng puso na nire-request ka.

“Kaya it’s a big honor for me to be working with Direk Mac again.”

PANCHO & TITA’S GRANDSON. Pagkakataon din daw ito ni Tita Glo na makatrabaho ang apo ng mga kasabayan niya noon na sina Pancho Magalona at Tita Duran—si Elmo.

Nakatrabaho raw ni Tita Glo sina Pancho at Tita, na pareho nang namayapa, sa Sampaguita Pictures noon.

Pagbabalik-tanaw nga ng movie queen, “One of my earliest movies na ginawa, titled Kasintahan Sa Pangarap (1951), sina Tita at Pancho ang mga bida. Baguhan pa lang ako that time.

“I’m ready” ang sagot ni Julie Anne San Jose sa sisimulang shooting bukas ng Just One Summer, launching movie nila ni Elmo Magalona sa GMA Films. “Masaya, kinakabahan at excited” daw siya sa first lead role niya and to be working with fine actors and to be directed by Mac Alejandre.

Kasama sa cast sina Cherry Pie Picache, Joel Torre, Boboy Garovillo, Alice Dixson, Enzo Pineda, Lexi Fernandez at Gloria Romero.

Nabanggit din ang pangalan ni Sef Cadayona na tuwang-tuwa.

Masaya rin si Julie Anne para sa fans nila ni Elmo na matagal naghintay na mapanood sila sa movie. Wish nitong suportahan at panoorin ang JOS at hindi lang sa Twitter ang pag-suporta.

Samantala, tuloy ang recording ni Julie Anne ng album niya under GMA Records.

Na-record na nito ang theme song ng movie na Bakit Ba Ganyan at last Wednesday, nag-recording uli siya para sa kanyang 10-track album.

Kapuso artist Julie Anne San Jose says her relationship with on screen partner Elmo Magalona is only professional.

In an interview with the 17-year-old singer during her contract signing with GMA Records for her upcoming debut album last Monday, February 20, Julie Anne said she and Elmo are “still getting to know each other.”

“Hindi naman sa hindi kami nag-uusap, hindi naman din po sa hindi kami close. Pero pag nagkikita po kami, as in work lang po talaga,” she told the press.

It’s not that they’re not close outside their joint musical endeavors, Julie Ann explained. They just never had the chance to explore their friendship further.

“Hindi po kasi kami, like, lumalabas na, ‘hey, let’s hang out.’ Parang wala pong chance. Busy din po ako, busy din po siya,” she shared.

“Wala po talagang chance na lumabas kami. Nag-uusap naman po kami. Pero that’s about it.”

Julie Anne also said she’s not yet ready to fall in love.

“This is not the right time to fall in love,” she said. “Wala pa po sa isip ko yung mga bagay na yan. Bata pa po kasi ako, e. Saka focus po muna sa work sa career.”

Future with Elmo

Does she think her partnership with Elmo has a future, considering the 17-year-old son of the late Francis Magalona has been continuously linked to other girls?

“Ako po kasi, kung ano po yung gusto ni Elmo, as a friend, suportahan ta ka,” she quipped.

The singer-actress believes she has nothing to do with Elmo’s personal life.

“It’s his private life. Nasa kanya naman po yun kung sasabihin niya sa akin (about his love life),” she said. “Kung magkwe-kwento naman po siya, magku-kuwentuhan kami.”

Although she appreciates the support the JuliElmo tandem gets from fans, Julie Anne said she wants to be recognized as a solo artist as well.

“Although maganda rin yung may kapareha, kasi bonus na rin po yun e, may solo careers din po kasi kaming dalawa,” she said.

But fans don’t need to say goodbye to JuliElmo just yet. Julie Anne and Elmo are slated to start shooting their launching movie “Just One Summer” this March.

Julie Anne revealed they’re still planning whether Elmo would be a part of her debut album.

The young singer added they’ve already chosen songs for her album. Two of the songs will be her original compositions while three will be covers; the rest will be original songs.

With a movie and an album on the way, Julie Anne is happy at how GMA-7 is building up her career.

“I feel so honored and grateful to be part of GMA Network kasi this is a big opportunity,”she shared.

Julie Anne also said that she remains simple despite the success.

“I’m just living out my dreams. And, yun, ginagawa ko po yung best ko para sa mga tao. Ang patuloy pa rin akong nakakapag-inspire ng iba.”

MALILIGWAK tiyak ang ka-loveteam ni Julie Anne San Jose na si Elmo Magalona ngayong todu-todo na ang buildup na gagawin sa kanya ng GMA Network. Bukod sa paglabas sa Party Pilipinas, pelikula sa GMA Films, heto’t pumirma na rin ang young singer sa GMA Records at ilalabas na ang solo album niya sa Mayo.

“Ay hindi naman po. Si Elmo naman po, since ka-loveteam ko siya, parang bonus na rin po. I think it’s time to have my own album naman,” sey ni Julie Anne sa contract signing niya kamakalawa.

Wala pang final line-up ng songs ng album niya pero ayon sa kanya, “I would love, too, na makasama ko si Elmo sa album.”

Kasama sa album ang dalawang compositions niya at merong three covers. Paano na ang akting career niya?

“Gusto ko ring pong mag-akting. Nabuhay po kasi ako sa music. Kumbaga, bata pa lang ako, kumakanta na ako. Okey naman po. Okey din akong mag-acting,” sey niya.

Eh, sa gagawin nilang movie ni Elmo, meron ba silang kissing scene?

“Hahaha! Kung ano po… kung nasa eksena po talaga, gagawin po namin,” sagot ni Julie Anne.

Love ba niya si Elmo?

“Hahaha! Bakit ganoon po ang tanong? Kasi wala pa po sa isip ko ang bagay na ’yan. Turning 18 pa lang po ako,” rason niya.

Ayaw ba niyang maging boyfriend si Elmo?

“Hindi naman po sa ayaw. Hindi pa po ako talaga handa and this is not the right time to fall in love,” katwiran niya.

Bakit naman?

“Kasi po, bata pa po ako. Siyempre, focus muna sa work at career,” tugon ng young singer.

Ano ang bagong handog ni Kapuso singer Julie Anne San Jose para sa kanyang mga tagahanga? Amanda Fernandez

May surpresa ang Kapuso pop superstar at Internet musical sensation na si Julie Anne San Jose para sa kanyang mga masusugid na tagahanga.

Sa press conference na naganap nitong Pebrero 20 ng tanghali sa GMA Network Center, pumirma si Julie Anne ng kontrata sa GMA Records, recording at digital media arm ng GMA Network, upang gawing opisyal ang kanyang pagsasagawa ng kauna-unahan solo album, na ilalabas sa kalagitnaan ng taon.

Ayon kay Julie Anne, sinisimulan na nila ang pagpaplano para sa kanyang album. Aniya, “Nakapili na po kami ng songs. Ang dalawa po doon, compositions ko po. Tapos ‘yung other tracks ko po, puro original and three cover songs.”

Sa kabila ng kanyang magandang career sa pagkanta, bukas din umano si Julie Anne upang ipagpatuloy ang kanyang acting career. “Gusto ko rin naman po ang acting, pero nabuhay po kasi ako sa music. Kumbaga, noong bata pa po ako, talagang kumakanta ako. Okay lang din naman po sa akin mag-acting,” aniya.

Unang napanood sa telebisyon sa Julie Anne noong sumali siya sa “Little Ms. Philippines” ng noontime show na Eat Bulaga noong tatlong taong gulang pa lamang siya. Nag-umpisa naman ang kanyang professional singing career noong 2005 nang maging miyembro siya ng teenage singing group na “Sugar Pop.”

Matapos mabuwag ang grupo, inilunsad ni Julie Anne ang kanyang solo career sa pangangalaga ng GMA Artist Center, ang talent development and management department ng Kapuso Network.

JuliElmo, hindi pa mabubuwag

Itinanggi naman ni Julie Anne na mabubuwag na ang kanyang love team kasama si Elmo Magalona dahil sa kanyang solo album. Aniya, “Hindi po. Actually po, si Elmo, may single na rin siya. Ako naman po, may album na rin po. At magkakaroon na rin naman po kami ng movie so hindi naman po siguro kami magka-kanya-kanya.”

Dagdag niya, “Though maganda rin naman na may kapareha ka, bonus na rin po iyon. Syempre, may solo careers rin naman po kaming dalawa.”

Inaabangan na ni Julie Anne ang pagsisimula ng kanilang shooting para sa kanilang pelikula na “Just One Summer” ng GMA Films sa unang linggo ng Marso.

“Ako po, syempre masaya po at medyo kinakabahan kasi po ng konti. First lead role ko po ito. At excited na rin po ako kasi makakatrabaho ko ang ilang artists na hindi ko pa nakakatrabaho. And syempre, si Direk Mac Alejandre rin ang director namin,” aniya.

Nang tanungin kung handa na ba siyang magkaroon ng kissing scene kasama si Elmo, ang kanyang sagot ay: “Kung nasa eksena po talaga, gagawin po namin professionally.”

Patuloy ang pagtanggi ng 17-anyos na si Julie Anne kung may namumuo sa kanila ng kanyang ka-loveteam. “Hindi ko po alam. Wala pa po kasi sa isip ko po iyan. Ayaw ko rin po. Basta hindi pa po ako handa and this is not the right time to fall in love. Bata pa po kasi ako e. Syempre, focus muna sa work at career.”

Pagsunod sa yapak ni Lea Salonga

Nang pinapili kung sinong mang-aawit ang yapak na nais niyang sundan, pinili niya si Lea Salonga. Aniya, “Kasi po idol ko na po siya, bata palang po ako. Kasi po si Ms. Lea sobrang professional po niyang mag-work and sobrang linis po ng boses niya.”

Kanya ring inihayag ang pagnanais na balang araw, sasabak din siya sa broadway. Handa umano siyang iwan ang kanyang career sa Pilipinas upang matupad ang kanyang pangarap sa abroad. Aniya, “If it’s God’s will po, iyon po ang susundin ko. Kung saan po ako dadalhin ni Lord.”

Lubos naman ang pasasalamat ni Julie Anne sa GMA Network at sa lahat ng mga sumusuporta sa kanya. Aniya, “Oo naman po and now I feel so honored ang grateful to be part of GMA Network. I would also like to thank the Lord, sa family ko, at syempre sa supporters ko na sumuporta sa akin all the way.”

Mapapanood si Julie Anne tuwing Linggo sa musical variety show ng GMA 7 na Party Pilipinas. Elmo said that his mom Pia likes Julie Anne

MANILA, Philippines – Elmo Magalona finally opened up about the rumor that his mom Pia doesn’t like for him his onscreen partner Julie Anne San Jose as potential girlfriend.

“I don’t know. As her son, I think I know better na hindi niya sasabihin yun,” Elmo was quoted as saying by PEP on Oct. 17.

Apparently, the rumor surfaced after Pia reportedly expressed her disapproval of Julie Anne in an interview.

On the contrary, said Elmo, “humahanga siya kay Julie bilang magaling [siya] na performer.”

To support his point, the “Party Pilipinas” mainstay related that “everyone likes Julie, the family, the crowd” when she performed at the Francis M. Foundation benefit concert held last Oct. 8.

“Nothing negative about it,” Elmo added.

On the other hand, Julie Ann was surprised when she learned about the rumor.

However, she clarified that “wala po akong nararamdaman [na anything negative] kasi mabait naman po si Miss Pia sa akin.”

The young singer expressed her utmost respect for Mrs. Magalona, adding, “binabalik ko lang din po yung respeto na binibigay niya din po sa amin.

“Siyempre po, yung trust po na binibigay niya sa akin na ma-partner kay Elmo, siyempre nakaka-flatter din yun,” she said.

According to Julie Anne, she has also heard of the compliments coming from Elmo’s mom “so parang hindi ko rin po alam na kung may something po ba na ano, alam mo na, parang may negative feeling, parang wala po siguro.”

In an exclusive report by PEP on April 8 this year, Pia only had good things to say about Julie Anne as she heaped praises on her as a performer. She also commended Julie Anne for juggling her showbiz career with studies.

“I really like that girl!” Pia said.

But asked if she approves of a possible romantic relationship between the two teens, Pia just “smiled and [shook] her head, saying, “Not yet.”

She then explained the rule imposed on all of her children that “before you enter the age of maturity or of majority you cannot enter any relationship” so that they’d be able to “concentrate more on life and personal growth before they go into a relationship with other person.”

“I do not disapprove of Julie Ann in particular. It is just that is my rule in the family.

“People might think that I’m against Julie Ann, No! I am very much in awe of her. I like it that she is very talented. I am a big fan of talented people. My standards are very high in order to please me, ha,” Pia stressed.

Aside from their regular stint on “Party Pilipinas,” Julie Anne and Elmo are part of GMA’s newest primetime series, “Daldalita.” More, they will be also starring in their first movie, “Just One Summer” to be released in 2012.

Elmo: Kaming dalawa ni Julie, talagang enjoy namin yung presence ng isa’t-isa,tapos nga we have the chemistry

- J: Yeah, I’m pretty much excited about it coz it’s gonna be my first ever starring role on the big screen. As yet, the movie title is “JUST ONE SUMMER” (partnered with elmo). Ang role ko sa movie ay anak ng katiwala sa hacienda ng family ni elmo. So basically it’s an inspiring love story of a poor-girl and a rich-kid.
